This piece is inspired by the story of the rich young ruler—a man who had kept the commandments since his youth and sincerely asked Jesus, “What do I still lack?” When Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give to the poor, the man walked away grieved. Giving up his wealth and social position was “too great a sacrifice; and the necessary self-denial was a cross too heavy for him to bear” (Jesus the Christ, James E Talmage). The issue wasn’t his wealth, but his attachment to it.
Jesus used this moment to teach that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God. Meaning that entering the Kingdom of God requires more than outward obedience—it requires a heart fully surrendered. We must be willing to strip ourselves of all worldly things to enter the Kingdom of God. And though it may seem impossible, Jesus reminded the disciples that with God all things are possible.
This artwork is a call to honest reflection. It invites us to ask the same question: What am I holding on to? What do I lack?
