There are so many beautiful paintings that depict the Parable of the Prodigal Son.
But none of them include the brother.
The brother is what sets this parable apart from the Parable of the Lost Coin, or the Lost Sheep.
"No one had complained at the recovery of a stray sheep nor at the finding of the lost coin....."
This piece is my interpretation of this parable- not with a single focus on the returning son, but with both brothers sharing the canvas.
One represents the wayward heart that returns, the other the faithful one who never left.
At the top, the father, God, watching over both with unwavering love.
This parable was never meant to glorify the idea of leaving and coming back.
But to shed light on the fact that God rejoices over every repentant sinner, and yet His love for the faithful never wavers.
One child left and came home. One had always been home. Both are seen. Both are loved.
This art invites us to not only reflect on God's mercy for the lost, but also His deep appreciation for the quietly faithful.
It asks us to see ourselves in both brothers and to look up to our Father in Heaven who would run to greet us all.
